Start of track from Western Bay Rd (SH32). Waihaha River carpark on Western Bay Road (SH 32), the trail follows the river for a few hundred metres before it crosses the river on a swing bridge. The trail then climbs up the river onto the cliffs above, following the course of the river to the end of Waihaha Road.

Statue of shearer, Te Kūiti
Te Kūiti is the home of one of the great champions of shearing, David Fagan, who by 2008 had won the Golden Shears 15 times, the New Zealand open title 16 times, and the world championship five times.

Te Tokanganui a Noho marae (also known as Te Kūiti Pā) is located on State Highway 3 in the township of Te Kūiti. Built 1873.

The Kawhia Emblem explained
Kawhia is known in Māori lore as the final resting place of the ancestral waka (canoe) Tainui. Soon after arrival, captain Hoturoa made it first priority to establish a whare wananga (sacred school of learning) which was named Ahurei. The harbour area was the birthplace of prominent Māori warrior chief Te Rauparaha of the Ngāti Toa tribe.

Went fishing with our host and Kawhia Camp owner. For the cost of a donation for petrol we got a freezer full of Snapper and great company. Brilliant. Well done mate.

Our host and Kawhia Camp owner. We caught probably 20-30 legal size schnapper in 40 minutes and brought home 15 to fillet.

View from Scape Holiday Park right on waters edge. One of the best run and serviced motor camps we've stayed at. Plus fantastic fishing with Conrad, Camp owner.
Gateway to Kawhia
A small town, population less than 400. A hidden gem. Tidal but a beautiful harbour. Great for Schnapper fishing.
Beach side S-Cape
Cant say enough good stuff about this camp. Booked for 1 night and ended up staying for 3.
